Do you ever complain that Amsterdam has become a “tourist attraction”, that “everything is about the hype”, that “Amsterdam has been gentrified”, or that places like the city center and De Pijp are “too yuppified” and you “wouldn’t want to be caught dead there”?
Then this site is for you. Because it’s time for action—and we need you for that.
Some of the statements above are true. But at the same time, there are still countless places where you can feel, taste, smell, and hear the real Amsterdam. We refuse to let TikTok trends make us give up on Amsterdam or stop feeling at home in our own neighborhoods and city.
In this system, where you spend your money matters. If you spend it at big chains like 3WO, Bob Nagel, or Fam. Goudvisch, they’ll keep growing. But if we spend more at local brown cafés, community centers, and small businesses, those are the places that get a fighting chance to survive and avoid being swallowed up by big capital.
That’s why it’s time to map both the local spots and the ones owned by big capital—so we don’t give up on the places that still hold the soul of our city.
By collectively spending our money at local entrepreneurs who give back to the city, rather than at big businesses that only take, we’re taking a step toward saving Amsterdam.
So….
We’ve created a map where you can find businesses run by local entrepreneurs, as well as those owned by big chains to avoid. The map isn’t complete yet, but we’ll build it together. This way, we’ll all see that our city can still be saved, while keeping an eye on big capital. Know of a place or are you a place that should be added to the map? Fill out this form.
Want to rate places yourself? Check out the BIG CAPITAL/LOCAL checklist.
